Socialisation for Dogs & Humans :)
They say dogs need to be socialised and to know how to behave. Whether this be their own kind, with kids, with all humans and with the world around them.
When Max arrived all was new to him from the car he came home in, to the lead he was attached to, to the house, the front door, the carpets and the tv. Just imagine you went from your Mum to somewhere nasty, to a noisy pound full of very scared canine, to a rescue with amany slightly happior canines to 2 seemingly nice humans picking you up and a thing that makes lots of noise and lots of things whizzing past the window to a place that is in your mind like no other….. No wander Max sat in the back garden for the 1st afternoon surveying all the comings and goings. So many new things.
These days he does not bat an eyelid at new things except he does not like the washing machine on spin or the hoover, but who does!!! He follows me round with his tail down watching the hoover and comes for a cuddle once it has stopped it’s horrible noise. We are both relieved when that is over :)!
We are going on lots of walks at the moment with lots of dogs. Max has a great time with his doggie friends and I have a great natter ith their human’s. I have found it really interesting in finding out their experiences and lots of dogs have things they are scared of, but with time and work these are becoming less.
Many dogs, like humans, are scared of different things. From cars and lorries that go past, to new dogs on leads to water or maybe of the thing that hurt them…. a rolled up paper or a foot. Many rescue dogs have a fear of something in their past, but this does not stop them loving new things if introduced gently in their future.
I have a friend who is scared of water and she is working towards going on a ferry. It takes time for her to get over each thing that worries her and as she does she is a little closer to that holiday in France. Another friend was scared of flying and with hypnotherapy she flew to Disneyland Paris and did fine on the way there and back.
Dogs are the same, they may not talk, but you can work with them to help them get over their foyballs and phobias. It is all worth it in the end, you ask any dog owner, not just those that have rehomed a rescue dog.
Socialisation is not just for the dogs, it is great to go out and chat to people who want to know about your dog, who have dogs that you meet or have had a dog like yours. Socialisation of the humans is I am sure what many dogs think they are doing at the park or on a walk….. :)!

Summertime is officially here, lets hope it is a nice hot summer for lots of walks and doggie paddles in the sea.
My.DogsBlog Profile: My name is Vici I live in Hampshire (UK) with my partner Marcus, Max the dog and a cat called Barney. We rescued Max from a rescue in Somerset in August 2006. Our lives have not been the same since. Max is a big part of our lives, he is intelligent, fun and most of all you never know what the next day will bring. Him and his brother Barney get on really well and this blog tells a little of what Max the collie gets up to with or without Barney. :)! 1 commentMax’s Start in Life
There is mystery surrounding how Max came to be in the pound, but we do know that he was probably abused and probably an unwanted part of the litter possibly from a farm that wanted a sheep hearding dog. Max doesn’t really want to know about sheep or cows, he likes horses, but is very nervous around most humans.
He arrived in the pound in Wales, did his 7 days and instead of being put down was saved by Sylvia at Many Tears Rescie. Within a few days he was taken to his foster home in Somerset, where he was introduced to about 15 resident chocloate labradors, horses, kids, other foster dogs and was partnered up with Mikie.

Mikie (black & gold kelpie)
Max (Very special Border Collie)
Mikie has also found a new home after an awful start in life. He was tied up for the 1st year of his life. On a chain with the same collar, that Many Tears had to have surgically removed from his kneck when he arrive. Mikie will always have a scar, but is still lovely, if a bit mad around people.
Back to Max, he is a gorgeous oversized puppy dog. He has found so many new things in his first few days with us that most people would be shell shocked.
His first -
ride in a car
house - new home
garden
stairs to climb and descend
doors - that he has learnt to open already
bed to relax on - preferably ours!!!
regular walkies and regular food with his own bowls and treats as well
- all within his diet, so as not to put on too much weight
forever family (humans and cat)
Things that have scared him -
thunder & lightoning
big exhaust on cars, noisy engines and car stereos
getting into the car, but jumps out no problem
Barney the cat - but this is just because he is new to Max, they are still settling in together
His first night in the kitchen, but we will kepp working on this.
One big thing that I think a lot of rescue animals have is timidness or a need to protect themselves. Max loves people and his head being scratched. But, when a man stands up he gets scred. Maybe a man abused him or was the route of his fears, we will never know, what Max will hopefully come to know is that no man will ever hurt him or scare him again. He is now in his forever home.
Time is a great healer and we have plenty to devote to Max.

Many Tears Rescue is a small charity that takes in many unwanted, unloved or past their use (evil people who do the latter) dogs and some cats.
Their website is always full and their centres and fosters are full to bursting with dogs who need love and their forever home.
As their title on the website says “The soul can have no rainbows, unless the eyes have shed some tears!”
They care for numerous dogs that are x puppy farm. This evil process is where the evils breed and breed from dogs that do not know love. life, a home. They are treated as a commodity never cuddled, just puppy after puppy after puppy. Then at possibly 2 years the bitches have past their best they are left to be culled by the pound or rescued by people like Many Tears.
These dogs are not your usual bouncy babes that love human, they have not known humans, so are just shells of dogs. With time and care they become boucny and happy, but the time and input has to be found with their forever home.
Other dogs are deserted because they are a tie, are not what the owner wants, too big, wrong breed, too boisterous.
If you read this just think that if you take on a dog, that dog is a being. If you choose a dog he / she has a breed nature and a personality. Some dogs will want to be with people all the time, some will need lots of exercise to keep them happy, opthers will need special diets. Like people all dogs are different.
PLEASE take time to find the breed for you, the dog for you and ensure that for the next 15 + years that you can make the animal you choose a big part of your family, life, holiday plans, days out, days in and day to day life. Or do something wonderful, go to one of hundreds of centres and rescue a dog, give it that forever home that the past it has had has failed to do.

Kristanna Loken & Bobby
I have a dog called Bobby. I found her when I was in Romania filming BloodRayne, I found her in the oldest medieval town in Europe.
She was teeny, tiny, she could fit in the palm of your hand, she must have only been a couple of months old, and she was covered in fleas, maggots you know she really wasn’t looking like she was going to make it. She travels everywhere with me from South Africa, to Van Couver – everywhere, she’s a very well travelled dog!
Its funny you know, a lot of the other people in the production office all came back with an extra animal, Michael Madison, Michelle Rodriguez, our director was a huge animal lover, he came back with a dog too!
Before I had Bobby, I had another dog, a Lab x Rottweiler called Buster, Bobby probably weighs 20 kilos and she’s medium sized, Buster was probably 35 kilos, travelling was a little tougher with Buster because he was a larger dog, sometimes it was like smaller dogs are okay – bigger dogs aren’t always welcome, but you know that’s a sacrifice, especially if you’re staying in a particular place for a certain amount of time filming. My animals coming with me is so important, its like a piece of home and I find its grounding, I always like to explore and recently in Van Couver, I was working with the same director from the film in Romania and he is a major dog lover, his two dogs, one from Romania, the other from Germany, both ran free on set and so Bobby joined them and we’d get the flashing collars for night-time.
I have to say, I have been no where more pet friendly than Van Couver, they had room service for dogs where you could order treats, there were so many walks and trails. All the costs for travelling from Romania back through South Africa and then home, its all worth while for the time we spend, walking or trekking, whatever we do, what they give back – it outweighs it all.
I got Buster form a humane society in North New York, I’d decided to go there and donate some time volunteering, Buster leaned on me and it was like, oh no, I’m a goner, and that was it really. He died a little over a year ago, I ended up having to have him put to sleep, and I just wanted to mourn my loss, then three months later there I am in Romania! I think dogs pick their owners, Bobby picked me and there was no way I was leaving without her.
I was camping in South Africa with a friend of mine and you know when you’re in another country when you’re left saying, will we be okay here with the baboons? Anyway, we were in the tent and Bobby ran in and started licking my face and we were right near the stream and we looked out and there were probably around 100 baboons and the big daddy baboon was there, it was a real territorial thing. But she knew, and she woke us, I mean baboons can do a lot of damage! She was definitely on the look out – I like to see her with other animals, the other day she was in my garden and barking like mad, I went out and I could see the big eyes of a possum I thought, that would not be a good fight, I know who’d win that one, so I brought her inside!
I learnt a lot from Buster too, he had a major impact and was a huge influence on my life, for months before he died, it was all leading up to it, he had a tumor and there was nothing which could be done about it. I remember this one day, he wasn’t well, he wasn’t eating properly and I was sick with the flu, I was cuddled up in my hammock and Buster was laying on his chair, and even though he was in so much pain, he heard someone at the gate and he got up and started barking and they left, so he could hardly move and yet, he’d gotten up to do this and scare away the intruder, his last protective act. His death was the biggest of my life.

My very first dog’s name was Lestat. She was our family dog. She was a beautiful German Shepard, and was very maternal. I used to sleep under the Grand piano with her, and she treated me like her puppy. If i would wander too close to the pool, she would grab my dress with her teeth and gently tug me back toward the house! Once, while we were out of town, someone broke into our house in Los Angeles. Lestat, who was a gentle giant, had to attack the burglar to protect the place. The robber stabbed her in the shoulder with a screwdriver, and without batting an eyelash, she chased him out the front door, and down Mullholand drive! By the time the police intercepted the bugler, he was BEGGING them to put him in the car. When we got home, the police were there, and Lestat was all bandaged up, tail wagging end ever so happy to see us! She was the best.

Jak is funny on a daily basis. But, when we were at the dog park last week, I saw this huge black rotweiler on top of a big hill. He had just done his business, and was dragging his butt on the top of the hill to finish up. Well, he got distracted for one second while doing it, and dragged himself RIGHT off the hill!
He slid all the way down this enormous grassy hill, just tumbling down, and coming to an abrupt halt at the bottom. When he landed he had the most confused look on his face that you have ever seen! Unhurt, He then proceeded to attack the hill, barking at biting at it! The entire dog park exploded in laughter.
Jak looks like he is a walking accident! But despite his rough start, he is a very healthy little dog. I took him to the vet a few days ago to get his papers signed so he can fly wherever i go for the holidays. Jak is very clumsy tho, he slips and falls at least once a day… and you cant help but laugh. I think its the depth perception thrown off by the one eye!
